Woodworking Safety Tips

Working with wood can be a fascinating hobby.  It allows the woodworker to express creativity in the production of something useful or decorative.  Woodworking involving saws, wood, and other potentially dangerous tools must be done cautiously and carefully.  Follow common sense safety tips to prevent accidents. This is all very important for all and use this as your woodworking for beginners guide.

Always keep your mind on your project when you are working with wood.  Many accidents in workshops are the result of someone allowing their mind to drift in the middle of a project.  It is imperative to keep your mind on every cut and movement in the wood shop in order to prevent injury.  Staying focused will also help you produce a beautiful wood product.

Keep your woodshop clean.  It will promote safety and reduce the chance of an accident.  Keep equipment clean, sharpened, and in its proper place.  This will give you a tidy workspace and help avoid accidents of stumbling over things that are out of place or in the way.

Some of the worst accidents can occur when a woodworker tries to rush a job.  Impatience has no place in the workshop.  Trying to rush cutting or to work too quickly may lead to an accident.  Take your time.  Finish your product the right way, not the rushed way.

It is important to wear safety equipment when working with wood and saws.  Do not begin a woodworking job until you have the proper safety equipment. Safety regulations require ear protection, lung protection, steel-toed boots and safety eye goggles.  Tools which come with safety features, like protective covers, should have their safety features in place.  Many safety features keep your fingers from getting too close to a blade.

Wood doesn’t always cut like it is supposed to.  Stop resistant wood cuts immediately.  Stop the saw and try to find the problem.  A misaligned rip fence, improperly seated plate, or any of a number of problems can create problems when cutting.  Make sure the problem is resolved before you begin cutting again.  Forcing the blade may lead to an accident, like throwing the wood or saw, and it can also tear up your saw.

Woodworking is a fun and exciting hobby, but if you don’t take proper safety measures it can be dangerous.  Next time you decide to get crafty in the workshop, be sure that you remember the importance of safety first.  Now you should be ready to attack that do it yourself fence building project.
