Solar Panels
Solar panels are pieces of solar power systems that collect sunlight and convert it into electricity. The homes that have solar power, you will usually see the solar panels mounted on top of the roofs of those houses.
What is A Solar Cell?
Solar cells are the main items laid side by side in a solar panel. These cells are interconnected and packaged into an assembly called photovoltaic modules, also known as solar panels. A solar cell, when exposed to sunlight, generates electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The origin of the solar cell can be traced back to 1839, when E. Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect. There were few practical applications of the discovery, until R. Ohl invented the solar cell in 1946.
Many companies are using silicon to produce solar cells. It is a great conductor to produce electricity from this method of energy collection. Other materials such as copper indium diselendie, gallium arsenide, and cadmium telluride also work well. Thin film amorphous technologies and Silicon companies are the ones creating these materials used in solar cells.
At present, silicon cells (also known as wafer or bulk cells) capture 93% share of the market, while thin-film cells have 7%.
Solar cells have to efficiently function especially when space is a premium for systems. It will determine what the payback periods are like, this will be around 10 years or so for the better solar panels for sale. Silicon cells of polycrystalline and monocrystalline are efficient at about 8% to 18%, and amorphous cells from 4% to 8%. An example of high efficiency solar panels would be panels from Evergreen Solar Panels and AEE Solar Panels.
The Solar Panels
Just as any other electrical device would have a voltage rating, so to do solar panels. Groups of solar cells are interconnected to each other to make up a powerful and practical output of current, power, and voltage. There are a few connection options you can implement to accomplish this task or make it run more efficiently. The cells that are grouped together into photovoltaic modules are what we call solar panels.
For very large solar panel systems, they will be arranged and interconnected into very big arrays.
If you interconnect 30 to 32 cells in a panel serious with 16 volts, it makes it a great way to charge batteries and you will not required a charge regulator. This sort of panned is great for small systems. For a larger system, you will need more panels and more voltage.
There are two types of classifications for panels, those are concentrating type, and non-concentrating types. A concentrated type works great in areas that get a lot of sunlight. The non-concentrating types are used to absorb reflected sunlight but it can also absorb direct sunlight.
As far as the commercial side of things goes, you can purchase solar panels with 5 watts to 230 watts. For a home solar panel system, you may want to go for a panel that is higher in the wattage department. You can however, find cheaper solar panels with decent amounts of watts. For example, you can find a 72$ 60 watt unit, which is very reasonable. A higher end unit with 224 watts can be found for $666. The price of the panel will be based on the wattage.
